Sunday 31 May at Hawkwood Community Farm
Our second open day of the year sees us continuing to offer a wide range of plants and composts to help you with your growing season! As well as a fully stocked farmstall, vegan lunch and snacks, and site tours, including one led by and designed for young people. We are also offering a plant aftercare workshop and a discussion on the food system and the concept of food sovereignty: the right to food that is controlled by and for people, communities and the environment, not for big business, elites or private profit. There might be some singing too!
Timetable for the day
Open Day 12-4pm. We’ll be inviting visitors to make a suggested donation of a few ££ when they come to help cover the costs of running the open days. Although we can take card payments, we love cash if you can bring it.
Farm stall: Open 12-4. Stocked with compost, organic seasonal produce and OrganicLea merchandise, as well as solidarity goods from further afield.
Plant stall: Open from 12 pm to 3.45 pm. Stocked with all the veg plugs and seedlings we still have in stock as well as herb, edible flower and fruit plants – all waiting and hungry to get into the ground! And our hand-mixed seed sowing, potting and container compost, as well as greenwaste compost and woodchip.
Plant Aftercare Workshop: 1-2pm. In the glasshouse, learn how to care for your tomatoes for best results!
Refreshments and Bar: Available all day – hot drinks and delicious vegan cake.
Lunch: Served from 12.30 pm – 2.30 pm. We’ll be in the kitchen cooking up warm meals made with organic and seasonal produce.
Site tours: 2pm – join us for a walk around Hawkwood to see what we’re growing and learn more about OrganicLea’s work. Includes a special ‘what’s going on?’ tour for younger visitors led by some of the young people doing work experience with OrganicLea.
Transforming the Food System: 3pm – an opportunity to find out more and share learning about the vision OrganicLea shares with other agro-ecological growers of a socially and environmentally just food system.
All this and also a visit from a members of the Fire Choir who will share a few rousing songs with a land justice and environmental focus, and help publicise an exciting gig coming up later in the summer!
Getting to our open day
We encourage you to come by public transport or bicycle if possible, so check out our directions to Hawkwood site including bus, rail/walk through forest and river-cycle routes. For car drivers, please park off site to avoid congestion. This event is always busy so on site we only have a few car parking spaces reserved for those with access needs, and a pick up point for those buying more plants/compost than they can transport in a wheelbarrow.
Online compost sales for collection and delivery
If you can’t make it to the open day but would like to buy any of our handmade seed, potting and container compost mixes, or general garden compost and woodchip, we sell these in our compost shop for collection at Hawkwood or delivery on select dates.
