OrganicLea solidarity payment scheme

We use a solidarity pricing system for our fruit and veg boxes. So, if you’re able, you can choose to pay a bit extra each week to help cover the cost for someone else who needs a discount. It’s totally up to you – you can join or leave the scheme whenever you like.

By paying what you can on a sliding scale, we hope to foster more equity and diversity in the food system. If you’d like to help out, you can add £1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10 to your weekly payment. All extra contributions go towards lowering the price for those who need a helping hand.

You might want to pay a solidarity rate if any of these apply to you:

  • You’d like to support others in your community
  • You can cover all your basic needs comfortably
  • You have some spare cash
  • You have savings or have received an inheritance
  • Your rent or mortgage is less than 30% of your monthly income
  • You’re not working by choice (such as taking a break to think about your next steps)
  • You have strong earning potential, for example, you have a university degree

If you’d like to make a solidarity payment, simply choose the amount when you join the box scheme.

How does the discount work?

There’s no means testing to get a lower price – it’s there if you feel you need it. The usual discount is 20%, but if you need more, just ask. The price reduction comes from the solidarity payments, so sometimes there might be a waiting list, depending on how much support we have and how many people request a discount.

You might want to pay a discounted rate if any of these fit your situation:

  • You often worry about paying for basic needs and sometimes struggle to meet them
  • You have little or no spare money
  • You do unpaid care work
  • You don’t get state benefits because of your immigration status
  • You support children or dependents on a single income
  • You work part-time or have a low income (less than 16 hours a week)

If you want a discount, just email us at box@organiclea.org.uk.
