Join us for our first open day of the year as the growing season gets fully underway!
We’ll have all you need to give your growing a head-start – featuring our biggest plant sale of the year, bargain bag-your-own compost, and free sunflower seed sowing for pollinators too. Come and get seedlings, plug plants, compost, and join a horticultural workshop to help get your food garden flourishing over the coming months.
Our open days (April, May and September) are our main outlet for selling plants this year, so this is the place to go if you want to buy plants from us. We are selling our compost online, so if you can’t make it to the open day and would like to purchase compost from us, you can place an order at our online compost shop for delivery (selected dates only) or collection from Hawkwood.
Timetable for the day
Open Day 12-4pm. We’ll be inviting visitors to make a suggested donation of a few ££ when they come to help cover the costs of running the open days. Although we can take card payments, we love cash if you can bring it.
Farm stall: Open 12-4. Stocked with compost, organic seasonal produce and OrganicLea merchandise, as well as solidarity goods from further afield.
Plant stall: Open from 12 pm to 3.45 pm. Stocked with salad plugs and seedlings of our regular favourites – tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, kale, peppers, chard… as well as fruit and herbs, all grown in our very own peat-free potting compost mix.
Plant Aftercare Q&A: 1-2pm. Alongside the plant stall, get advice and tips for growing on your plants.
Bargain Bag-Your-Own Compost: To help kickstart your growing season, we will be selling Soil Association-approved Green Waste Compost at a bargain price, provided you fill your own sacks! Help will be on hand for this task. If you can’t bring your own bags we can supply them for 50p each.
Refreshments and Bar: Available all day – hot drinks and delicious vegan cake, and a selection of our beers brewed on site.
Lunch: Served from 12.30 pm – 2.30 pm. We’ll be in the kitchen cooking up warm meals made with organic and seasonal produce.
WalthamWild sunflower sowing: 12.30-3pm. Sow a sunflower to take home and find out more about all the action for biodiversity taking place throughout the borough in the Waltham Forest Food Growers’ Network.
Site tour: 2pm – join us for a walk around Hawkwood to see what we’re growing and learn more about OrganicLea’s work.
Getting to our open day
We encourage you to come by public transport or bicycle if possible, so check out our directions to Hawkwood site including bus, rail/walk through forest and river-cycle routes. For car drivers, please park off site to avoid congestion. This event is always busy so on site we only have a few car parking spaces reserved for those with access needs, and a pick up point for those buying more plants/compost than they can transport in a wheelbarrow.
