Mushroom cultivation for beginners
Date: Saturday 19th October 2024
Time: 10:30am to 4:30pm (including a lunch break, please bring your own)
This one-day workshop will deliver the foundational principles for cultivating many of the mushrooms that are considered edible and medicinal. Combining a mixture of theoretical and practical, the workshop will cover the following topics:
- fungi and ecosystems
- the mushroom lifecycle
- selecting a cultivation pathway
- tools of cultivation with health and safety considerations
- working with spores and mycelium – prints, stem butts, and liquid culture
- generating spawn – from low tech to simple advanced methods
- selecting a substrate and containers for fruiting
- incubation and fruiting environmental parameters
- creating an outdoor bed
At the end of this workshop you will have the basic knowledge you need to take your first steps in the home cultivation of both edible and medicinal mushrooms. This workshop will also generate material which you can take home to start your growing straight away!
This workshop is being run by Rod Sazio, OrganicLea’s Mushroom Grower who has several years of experience in culturing and growing mushrooms, from home cultivation to the current small-scale set-up at Hawkwood.
The standard price is £65 per person. If you can pay more, we encourage you to pay a solidarity price of £95, or feel free to specify the amount you would like to pay in addition to the standard price. If you cannot afford the standard price you could pay a reduced price of £35.
Please note this is a course designed for adults, so it is not possible to book places for under 18s.
