Open Day and Plant Sale
Sunday 24 September, Hawkwood Nursery
At our September open day our apple press is available for anyone to bring their apples or pears and make juice. And grape growers are invited to join the community wine scheme (see details here to register in advance). Join in our seasonal blitz volunteer morning, take part in the forest school for children of all ages, and bring a picnic – due to our refurbishment building works, we’re sorry there will be no refreshment stall this Open Day. Bring your own and enjoy the picnic benches, or glasshouse community tables inside.
Seasonal Blitz morning: our weekend volunteering opportunity, join us at 9.45 for a 10am-1pm session. We advise sturdy shoes and you are welcome to stay for the Hawkwood monthly Open Day afterwards.
Open Day (12-4pm)
All afternoon (12-4) Plant stall with guided tour of the stall at 2pm, gets you ready for the veg garden’s colder months, with an opportunity to skill-up and buy seedlings to plant for winter. From mustards and rocket to endive, kale, and chard, there are many choices when it comes to keeping your garden and your plate green over the coming cold months. As well as keeping up your vitamin and mineral intake for fighting winter illnesses, their fresh green leaves are a reminder and a harbinger of the next growing season – and they give you an early spring harvest too if you let some plants grow through.
All afternoon (12-4) Community fruit – bring your grapes to take part in the community wine scheme (details here), or bring your apples and pears to use our press to create scrumptious juice.
2.45pm Site tour – learn about the building and the site’s design.
12-3pm PlayfulLea Forest School – a drop-in family learning session offering outdoor play and holistic learning for children and families. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Please email hello[at]playfullea.org.uk with the name and age of your children if you plan to attend, so we have an idea of numbers. There is no charge for this session. We run regular weekly Forest School sessions for children at Hawkwood on Thursdays; and still have places in the afternoon for the Autumn term. Contact us for more information, and come along on Sunday to find out more.
Directions to our Hawkwood site including bus, rail and river-cycle routes are here. Parking available at the site.
