A workers' cooperative growing food on London's edge in the Lea Valley

Midsummer fun

The longest day of the year gives ample time after strawberry, broad bean and salad harvesting to celebrate the amazing volunteer work and learning which has taken place on the site over the past twelve months. What better way to celebrate than a barbecue lunch with burgers from the Hornbeam cafe and salad harvested less than an hour earlier! Followed by this year’s Hawkwood horticultural games: new heights of athleticism in the sack race and salad tossing and fierce concentration in the new event of year – the ‘potato and knife race’. Finishing up with the traditional tug of peace – and this year the salad team took away the prize.
