Spread the word and the compost – the seedlings are back!
The 1 May signals many good celebrations; May Day and Beltane, so we’re happy to be launching our first plant stall at the Hornbeam Centre in Walthamstow this Saturday, from 10-2.
As April transcends magically into May, at the Hawkwood growing site we’re having the time of our lives among the vegetable seedlings that are stacking up on the nursery staging, with the walking tractor as we slowly plough heavy clay soil and with gardening tasks that are all about potting on and planting out, followed by more potting on and planting out.
As with humans, tender loving care lavished on seedlings at a young and formative age is worthwhile investment for a healthy and productive life. The 1 May signals many good celebrations; May Day and Beltane, so we’re happy to be launching our first plant stall at the Hornbeam Centre this Saturday, from 10-2. We hope that the love and care that has been lavished on these hand-raised seedlings will bring health to the gardens and allotments of Waltham Forest!
This Saturday features some of our special plants including yellow courgettes, ‘Kew blue’ climbing french beans (a heritage variety), ‘snowball’ cauliflowers and ‘golden bantum’ sweetcorns, ‘red turban’ squash and a range of companion flowers to ward off pests and bring in pollinating bees and butterflies. Plants come with aftercare tips and growers are on hand to chat over cappucino and cake!
The stall will take place every Saturday throughout May and June at the Hornbeam Centre, 458 Hoe Street, Walthamstow E17 9AH – spread the word and the compost!
